Avon and The Red Cross Helping together for the victims of natural disasters, our story of their selfless help

Legitimate ways to help the hurricane victims seem to be a little hard to find. We at Avon have paired up with the Red Cross to help get our donations both monetary and products out to the people. For those who have not had the unfortunate situation to be in need of the Red Cross let me fill you in on some of the works they do during these disasters.

We have been flooded twice since in our home bad enough for the Red Cross to come in. The first time our home had some water but not too bad, the issue in the area was the destruction of our water system and electrical grid. The second flood took our home. Destroyed over 70% of it actually and laid waste to our area and many others down the Appalachian range.  Both times we were humbled by the good people of the Red Cross and many other groups who came in to do nothing more then help just as they are doing now in Texas and I am sure soon in Florida and up the east coast as another hurricane builds steam to hit there.

What did the Red Cross actually do? That's a legit question.

They:
  • Handed out clean-up tool such as shovels, buckets, rakes, hammers etc.
  • Handed out cleaning supplies from solvents to mops and more
  • Handed out information of safe and appropriate clean up, health and rebuild
  • Handed out first aid kits
  • Handed out comfort toys to young and some older people

They set up:
  • water stations both for drinking and washing
  • food distributions of canned and boxed as well as MRE's
  • meal hubs where hot meals were served to those in need
  • information hubs
  • centers for cleaning and other supplies

They drove around in trucks giving out:
  • cleaning supplies
  • food
  • meals
  • snacks
  • first aid kits
  • clean up tools
  • comfort packs

The volunteers came from all over the country. We met folks from Tennessee, Florida, California and Nevada on the truck that stayed local to our street feeding our community for the two weeks we had no electric and water the first time and the weeks upon weeks  they stayed the second time.  These people didn't just give out items they gave us shoulders to cry on. Inspiration, mostly from their own experiences. Comfort came from strangers as they helped our community come to terms with the destruction, the losses and the epic task of clean up and re-build. Let me tell you once what has happened has sunk in the task that lays before you is so huge as to be incomprehensible at first.  One barely even knows when and where to start, you just want to jump in and do something but the advice from the Red Cross held us back a couple days and that was important too because you just don't know what help you will get from FEMA and when. You cannot imagine what type of yuck grows two days later in your home when the water is gone and how hard the battle to clean the house enough for it to be safe to even go in and really access the damage is.

These are the reasons I have and will continue to donate to the Red Cross. Our boxes of supplies are on a trailer ready to go south. I am donating a percentage of my sales online to help via buying kits and dollar donations. So far I have purchased several kits personally and hope you can help me by buying your own to send down or by purchasing your Avon in my E-store and will donate this way for as long as this donation page is active via Avon.
