Maple Walnut Cake, vintage dessert recipe

Not many people use lard anymore. Butter and vegetable shortening has replaced this very tasty fat.  Maplene is actually a maple flavoring. You can get modern versions in your food store.  A cream cheese icing would be good or one of my favorites the cinnamon whisky frosting, a maple whisky could be used to match the cake.
