W hen flipping through old cookbooks I am always on the hunt for recipes I can use for my little one with a wheat allergy. I find the best ones come from these books because they aren't trying to make "gluten free" taste like the "normal" stuff. In fact the recipes are to use these flours and ingredients that were on hand in a tasty fashion not to mimic wheat flour products.   The best brownies don't use powdered cocoa they use real chocolate which gives not only and amazing flavor but also a rich, fudgy product that is just delectable for all. This recipe has you melting the chocolate over a double boiler and if you do not have one feel free to use a metal bowl over a steaming pot to melt the chocolate. Just be careful not to get any water in the ch ocolate as it melts or it will seize up like concrete. To make a variation of this recipe switch out the chocolate for flavored versions such as chocolate mint, raspberry or orange all lovely choices.

In the Great Depression there were people living without what we so often take for granted.  Imagine living in a camp or cabin with no stove or oven. Peanut Brittle, an old timey favorite. Forgotten by some and savored by others. It isn't easy to find on the shelves of most stores but some how makes it into the food baskets and towers of gifts during the holiday season.  I have not found raw peanuts in a very long time but do enjoy the flavor of the roasted and lightly salted variety. Found in an old cook book that was created to share recipes that were old 50 years ago this gem of a recipe was found. It is tasty and old fashioned. I love it. I can't help but gravitate towards the flavors of the past and this one is delightful. I also just couldn't get enough of the side notes in this old book. The pictures are a real hoot too! Bacon Jalapeño Ranch Deviled Eggs were my try at something tasty for my low carb diet that also hit my spicy craving needs. I have made several version that I had found on web searches and Pinterest but it wasn't until I met a lovely woman at a wine festival that I had the ingredient that took good eggs to awesome eggs.  Bevvy's Gourmet is a the place to get your dip  mixes and I have been buying from them for several years now. This recipe is nothing without their Jalapeño Ranch dip mix! These  eggs fit into the keto life style and are a great app to take to tailgates, parties and picnics. When taking them some place I always make sure there are pepper slices on top to identify them as having some spice. I know full well that not everyone can drink the hot sauce as it's put in out home for we are addicts to spicy foods. Not too long ago it became the rage to use cake mix to make cookies. Quick and easy with little measuring to do! The funny thing it wasn't new at all! Those 50's housewives and their need to make it convenient have been doing this now for decades.  I know this one is hard to read but we all know the basics of it.  1 box cake mix with 2 sticks butter and an egg mixed in and baked as a cookie.  It's as easy as buying your favorite gluten free cake mix to make these gf. White or chocolate bases gf or traditional it doesn't matter they both make great cookies. Be a bit more daring and try for strawberry or lemon based cookies. In North Eastern Pennsylvania it is traditional to eat Pork and sauerkraut on New Year's eve. I grew up in a part of NJ and had never heard of this but was happy to adopt the tradition. Now some people do a pork roast, some sausages or meatballs and then I found this. I love ribs are in my top 10 favorites so this will be made this year and I love that sweet element of the apple. When the season to harvest your herbs comes in it can be a lot to take in. How much dried or frozen herbs does one house hold need at any given time. Well think towards the colder months. Gift giving, hostess gifts at the holidays or just a sweet touch of something different to liven up a meal. This jelly is perfect for all of those things. This is some old school jelly making and I do not personally know anyone who still uses wax while canning. It's simple just can as you would any other jelly. I am not a lover of food coloring. Found tucked in to a Christmas book we found in the recycling bin. The Christmas book was from 1943 with all sorts of fancy recipes and table settings for a house wife to do.  Someone along the way had tucked this into the chapter about Christmas tea. We do not think of cakes as rolled out in any way as we bake them from batters in tins so this is defiantly something different from what we would call a cake.
