Cocoa paste, fall treats, hot chocolate, homemade beverage
The leaves are about to change and in some places already are! The time for campfires and hot chocolate are close enough one can smell it. Before the advent of hot chocolate mixes and syrups, squirt bottles and straws with flavor balls folks had to make hot chocolate from scratch and it was a little bit of a process which is why it was such a treat to have. There were those who had figured out to stream line the task making it easier to have this treat in a quicker amount of time once a little prep had been done.
The Philadelphia Dairy Council had a cookbook sometime in the late 1940/50's. They included all sorts of recipes and tips to get more people to drink milk. Some of these recipes were then used as advertisements as these were in church and grange books. The groups sold space in their cookbooks to help pay for the printing of them.
Making your own paste at home not only tastes better, you can tweak it to your family's tastes. Your favorite chocolate, dark, light or white even. Added flavors such as cinnamon, chili, orange or raspberry can turn this into a family tradition real quick. The paste isn't just for hot chocolate though. It is nice spread on an apple or as the following recipe uses it, in milk shakes.
