Most people hear butternut and think of the squash but in much of the country there are still butternut trees. No longer very popular these vintage cookies bring out the flavor of the nuts that people do still collect and dry for use. This simple cookie pairs the butternuts with raisins another fall time harvest is grapes that are preserved via drying and are easily found in stores.
It was interesting to me how this recipe gave an alternate to shortening that was a mix of lard and butter. This was a first for me. Alternatives to butternuts if you cannot purchase them or unable to collect your own: Pecan, almond, or hazelnut would be good.
