Cabbage Loaf, dinner, side dish, vintage recipe.

Waste not want not was a motto to live by for many, many generations. Most people today do not even think about keeping stale bread. They feed it to the birds or dog, toss it out in the trash and never think twice about it. This recipe from a depression era cook book shows exactly how everything was stretched out and used.  Stale bread and very cheap if not home grown cabbage becomes a meal or side dish with a little imagination.

To create more of a full meal a ground beef filling like one uses for stuffed cabbage would fill this out.  As would a layer of kielbasa or crumbled bacon and some hard boiled egg.
