Not just rhyming at home - language arts lessons

I am now on student #4 on this homeschooling journey and every subject I adapt and switch up what I do to make it work for this kid or to make an activity better, more stream lined. I don't really do "levels" or "grades" so to say but, if I had to put a label on this it works for the 1st and 2nd grades and can be easily adapted for older students. With so many kids affordable is also a must for our home. So this one box of cards that I got for a $1 at the Dollar store in town was a great base both for lesson plans and budget. Not to mention they are cute and inviting!
How I make these work for us.
Each card in this set has a list of rhyming words on its backside.
This list becomes our spelling list for the week. Yup that one box for $1 just became this year's entire spelling/language arts/English/grammar lesson plan! 36 weeks of not having to figure out spelling list! I did go through the cards and put them in order from easiest face word to hardest.
What did we do with the words?
Go over rhymes
Discuss different spelling of same sounds
List other rhyming words not on list
Spelling word traditional pre and post tests
Sentence writing with words
Create a story using words
Write each word 10x (both for practice spelling and handwriting, older kids do cursive)
Spelling games (We use spellingcity.com)
Flash cards (make and use with student)
Definitions
Word knowledge (syllables, compound sounds/words etc.)
Parts of speech (verb, noun, etc.)
Mad libs (make them use only these words if possible)
Scavenger hunt (I have them find the items on the lists)
Word scramble circles
Worksheets (example, I use superteacherworksheets.com the free version)
Find books to read that include the Face word
There is a lot here and we don't do every activity for every list. It is nice to do different activities each week to keep things fresh and interesting. These activities can be done with any spelling list you make, they do not have to be rhyming words.
