Black Walnut Meringue


Black walnuts used to be much more popular, now they are reserved for the gourmet crowd usually. They have a strong flavor that is a love it or leave it sort.  We have black walnut trees on our property and though as a child I had never had them once we had our own I sure wasn't going to let those nuts go to waste!  We pick them each fall going through the work of husking and drying to have a few months later perfectly dried walnuts to eat. That is when the real work starts as these nuts have some of the hardest shells ever! Hammer and rocks are what we use to get through those rock hard casings to the yummy centers.
