Comforts for Shrove Tuesday, homemade donuts vintage recipe

Fat Tuesday? Shrove Tuesday? Which ever you call it donuts have been  a staple food of the pre holiday, holiday for generations. Make some of the light and delightful treats at home. Not knocking the big chains but donuts at home just cannot be beat.

Traditionally these are rolled in sugar. This can be changed up either with colored, maple , brown, honey, beet or cinnamon sugars. Icing is a very popular alternative which can also be topped with pretty much anything. That said, all too often toppings take over and the simple pleasure of the humble donut is completely lost under the mounds of sugar.

Filled donuts are also very popular. Creams, custards, jellies, curds or butters such as nutella can all be squirted in using a piping bag with a long tip.  Not too much though!
