Ruins to lessons

I love what I do. I am an Avon lady, yes, but first and foremost I am a Mom who homeschools her kiddos. This is my main job and one of a life time. We do all the usual Math and English, Science and book History but I want, need, my kids to do and see more. Trips like the one we had this last weekend are exactly what I mean by the more. I can have them read about, watch about, or study about anything but to see and touch it is even better. Brick and mortar schools do field trips for a reason and we do them too, we do more of them because we can.

So this last weekend we went to a State Park which we absolutely loved!
Ruins of limestone kilns at Canoe Creek State Park
The park is near Altoona, Pennsylvania is called Canoe Creek, which was a bit of drive for us so it had to be an over nighter, which was cool. The park has comfy little cabins to rent as well as both a visitor's and education centers to enjoy.  In the education center we learned about the ruins of old limestone kilns. When and who they were built by, what for, how long they ran and what happened after the place shut down. The center also had tours to go on, animal and mineral lessons and the sciences of each, as well as exhibits to have fun with.  When done with the center we then took the short hike up to the kilns to explore. These we were able to climb around, touch, and take pictures of freely.

Lincoln Caverns

Since we were in a new area we searched around for some other cool learning things that would be fun for everyone! We found an awesome cave tour to do. Not only was it an interesting tour but one of the caves, there were two on the tour, was decked out for Halloween tours as well, (we didn't do that with the littles, way too scary).  This tour was great, the kids learned about caves of coarse, how they form, what's in them and how people find and the history of this specific cave. They also learned about bats, minerals and federal preservation laws. Multitude of subjects covered! At the end of the tour the ticket we bought for our littles included a "mining" for gems bag that they loved panning in the water with! With this came a picture card with the gems they could find and they had a blast identifying their rocks!

Learning can be fun and homeschooling or not we would have done and enjoyed this trip either way!
