Fascination Learning

Fascination Learning

When we did cyber school a year of common core completely turned my then 9 year old off of school. The craziness of that learning which had stunted her academic growth to a complete stand still had left her disillusioned and hating, yes hating learning. We knew we had to step back and re group. We pulled her from the cyber school and began to do our own curriculum. More failure. She hated the books now and refused to work in them at all. Every day was a fight with tears from both of us. I began searching for different ways to teach her and in a fashion pieced together a new way of learning that worked for her. She again became interested in learning, began absorbing and understanding. In a few months she not only gained from her stalling point but by the end of the "school" year (we base off when the state makes us do evaluations) she not only caught up to where she needed to be but passed it by almost a full year. Now each child is different and that may not be the case with yours. They may not like it, may not learn as fast or learn even faster. I can't say, you may adapt this to fit your needs, but I will put this way out there for those who just need to try something new.

Now we did not stop teaching the basics all together. I made a deal with her. 1 online lesson for each subject a day with the curriculum we use, which is games based and she doesn't mind doing. That includes: english, language arts, math and science.  Takes her about an hour or two a day mattering on the lessons and her drive.  Then we jump into our immersion topic.

Our Theory :
We choose 1 subject a month and immerse in that subject for the rest of the time.

What we do:
Choose subject
Make a list of what we want to learn about subject
Create schedule for month
Go to library for books
Study
Do hands on projects related to topic
Write a report
Edit and finish report

For instance I have a 12 year old who is all about learning about other countries. For 2 years she has chosen a country to study each month. We read the fairy tales and folk lore, study what type of government they have, their main religions, past religions, famous people (non Hollywood, more scientist and writers) cook their foods, and any other interesting facts she finds. She writes a report about said country at the end of the month.
