Teaching the Little Ones a Skill
Finger Knitting isn't a skill that's going to make or break a kids future, but it is one that can be used to make small gifts, teach patience, hand and eye coordination, small motor skills and basic counting. There are some adults who should try this themselves. It is pretty easy once you get the hang of it as you can see my kindergartner's doing pretty good in the video.
Step one is to make sure you have a good thick yarn, this one is a 6 ply and about a 1/4" diameter. This is important for at least the first few times and this is why. 1. fingers are thick so unlike a thing knitting needle you need a thicker yarn or you will have a pretty lacy end result that doesn't look good. 2. the thick stuff is easier for little fingers to work with. 3. it goes faster and as we all know this age group doesn't do well with long term projects.
Second step is to *weave the yarn through the fingers in one direction, wrap around the last finger and weave back in the other direction*. Do this one more time weaving down
and back so that each finger has two loops on the side you are looking at.
3. Pull bottom loop up over top of finger, move over to next until all loops are pulled up and over.
4. * and continue
5. to end, stop when there is 1 loop on each finger, take loop on end that is not where yarn tail is and pull it off putting it on the middle finger next to it. Take the now bottom loop up and over the transplanted one. now take the loop still on finger and move it over to next finger and repeat looping process. Pull tail through last loop to knot and just weave in the ends.
This is not a pattern just a simple skill. We just went until the piece was long enough to be a scarf for her doll.
